NYC (P) - Giving Back: Serving on a Non-Profit Board Workshop ( 6 PM)

About this event

Monday, February 12, 2024, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Have you been wondering how you can make a difference in your community?

Board service is a great way to give back, by giving your skills and experience to help a nonprofit that serves a cause or community you care about. It is a position with intrinsic rewards that can also provide opportunities for personal and professional development, allowing you to develop new skills, broaden your network and become a leader in your community.

Becoming a board member is also serious business and carries with it a significant level of responsibility. It is very important that current and prospective board members be aware of the responsibilities and expectations associated with serving on a nonprofit board.

In this workshop, Barbara Paxton, Director of BoardStrong, will discuss why you should consider board services and what it means to serve on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit organization. She will also give you advice about what to consider when you are selecting a board and how to find a board that matches your interests.

Join us for this workshop about the value of board service and great tips on how to find and join the right board for you. In addition four TTN NYC Chapter members who are currently serving on nonprofit boards will relate their more personal experiences along with the challenges and rewards of board service. They are:

Gayle Dakof is on the board of Evident Change that uses data and research to improve our social systems for all.

Darla Hastings served on the YWCA of Greater Boston and the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company boards and is currently on the TTN board.

Laura Randinsky chairs the board of Uptown Interagency Council for Aging and was its past Executive Director.

Betty Rauch is currently a board member of The Fortune Society after serving as Chair from 2007 to 2016.

Our Presenter: Barbara Paxton

She is the Director of BoardStrong an organization that provides nonprofits access to diverse board candidates with a passion to serve, while helping boards make best use of the talent around the table and preparing new board members to serve as effectively as possible.
