Join us on Saturday, January 6, 2024, to see Dorothea Lange – Seeing People at the National Gallery of Art. We'll meet in the West Building inside the Constitution Ave. entrance at 6th and Constitution.
During her long, prolific, and groundbreaking career, the American photographer Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) was hired to work for a government program that documented relief sent to farmers who had been hit hard by the collapse of the U.S. economy in the 1930s. Dorothea Lange: Seeing People features some 100 photographs; the exhibition examines Lange’s vision and creativity in her portraits that shaped our contemporary understanding of documentary photography. Divided into six thematic sections starting with her earliest works from 1919 and going through the Great Depression, her iconic portraits highlight her work on social issues, economic disparity, migration, poverty, and racism, revealing the character and resilience of everyday people she photographed.
