Paris 1874:  The Impressionist Moment

National Gallery of Art
West Building, Main Floor, 6th and Constitution Aves.
Washington, DC

Wednesday, November 6, 11:15 am - 4 pm

$10 - WC members & $15 non-member guests

How did Impressionism begin? Discover the origins of the French art movement in a new look at the radical 1874 exhibition considered the birth of modern painting.

This remarkable presentation of 130 works includes a rare reunion of many of the paintings first featured in that now-legendary exhibition. Revisit beloved paintings by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir and meet their lesser-known contemporaries. See the art norms they were rebelling against and learn what political and social shifts sparked their new approach to art.

Don’t miss the unique chance to immerse yourself in the dynamic Parisian art scene of 1874 - Washington's National Gallery of Art is the only American stop for this historic exhibition.

This exhibition is expected to be very popular and there is a likely possibility that there will be a line to get in.  They are NOT offering tours, so we will plan to meet in the line to enter the exhibit at 11:15 am and do our best to be together. We will rendezvous for lunch in the Cascade Cafe (underground between the East and West buildings) at 2 pm.

Since there is no in-person tour available, we have arranged to have Mary Morton, curator and head of the French paintings department at the National Gallery of Art, give us a private on-line tour by Zoom on Monday, November 4 at 4 pm!!  Be sure to also register for her talk!

We will rendezvous for lunch in the Cascade Cafe (underground between
the East and West buildings)  for a casual lunch at 2 pm.
