The Magic of Fred Astaire
He Made the Most Complex Dancing Ever Seen
Appear as Effortless as Breathing!

Fred Astaire was one of the twentieth century's greatest magicians- his sorcery depended on making some of the most complex dancing ever seen on the screen appear as effortless as breathing.

Whether it was partnering with Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Cyd Charisse or a hat rack - or dancing on the ceiling or on roller skates, he made everything appear easy and elegant.  Revered as a genius by everyone from Balanchine to Baryshnikov, Astaire appeared in a total of 133 dance numbers in 31 films, a significant portion of which are considered timeless classics of movie choreography.

This talk with survey the sweep of Astaire's remarkable career, looking at this work both as a soloist and as the most romantic dance partner in Hollywood history.

Brian Rose, a popular speaker with the Boston Chapter, will share his newest presentation with us.  Brian was a Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University's College at Lincoln Center, from 1982 until his retirement in 2020.  He's written several books on television history and cultural programming, and conducted more than a hundred Q&A's with leading directors, actors and writers for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the Screen Actors Guild, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and the Directors Guild of America .
