NYC (P) Explore NYC - WALKING TOUR OF THE MURALS AND MOSAICS OF SPANISH HARLEM (11am ET)

Friday, October 14, 2022, 11AM - 1:00 PM
RE-SCHEDULED FROM OCTOBER 2nd
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an EXPLORE NYC walking tour of the murals and mosaics of Spanish Harlem, a group of independent artworks that together tell the collective story of a truly interesting but often underappreciated neighborhood.
From honoring distinguished citizens to showcasing the gorgeous scenery from the tropical islands that so many members of the community left behind, the colorful murals and mosaics of Spanish Harlem reveal so much about the history, culture, and politics of this neighborhood and its residents.

What's the story behind these incredible works of art and subjects they're portraying? Leigh Hallingby, a NYC licensed tour guide who specializes in Harlem and is a TTN-member favorite, will give us:
  • A brief history of Spanish Harlem and its people, past and present
  • A walk past brilliantly-colored murals and mosaics, with commentary about the art and artists
  •  A discussion of how the murals link the struggles of different Latinx people including Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Mexicans
  •  An exploration of themes of cultural celebration, immigration, and physical fitness in the art works

We will walk less than a mile, zigzagging between east 111th and 103rd Streets. Our tour will end near the subway at Lexington Avenue and 103rd. Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes.

This outdoor tour will be rain or shine unless there is a National Weather Service emergency.

After our tour attendees can join fellow TTNers for (pay-your-own) lunch outdoors at a nearby restaurant.

PLEASE NOTE:
While masks are not required for this outdoor tour, attendees will be in close proximity. You are welcome to wear a mask during the tour if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Everyone will be asked to confirm that they have been fully vaccinated against covid when they register on the TTN website.
