The Jewish Deli examines how Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, created a uniquely American restaurant through the food of immigration. Through neon signs, menus, advertisements, deli workers’ uniforms, and video documentaries, it explores the heyday of the deli between the World Wars, delis and Broadway, stories of Holocaust survivors and war refugees who worked in delis, the shifting and shrinking landscapes of delis across the country, and delis in popular culture.
The exhibit was originally developed by the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and has been enriched with artwork, artifacts, and photography from the New-York Historical Society’s own collection. It now includes mouthwatering interactives and restaurant signs, menus and fixtures from local establishments you may recognize.
