NYC – (P) Explore NYC Private Tour of the historic New York Society Library (11am ET)

Friday, April 14, 2023, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Attention bibliophiles, NYC history buffs and art lovers.
Join fellow TTNers to explore this Upper East Side membership library and authors’ gathering place.

The New York Society Library, founded in 1754, is the city's oldest library and a thriving community of  readers and writers. Located in a landmark 1918 Italianate townhouse, the building's historic spaces display the Library’s eclectic art holdings as well as its 300,000-volume book collection.

The Library is open to the public for reading, reference, exhibitions, and events. Annual Membership provides book circulation and use of private reading/study spaces.

Our event will include:

  • An introduction to the library’s rich history, and an overview of famous members over the past 269 years, including George Washington, Herman Melville, Willa Cather and contemporary author Robert A. Caro.
  • A break out into small groups for tours of the major public and members-only spaces.
  • A visit to the rare book conservation studio and book bindery.
  • Attendees can also view the current exhibition, Quack! Quack! The Wonderful World of Robert Quackenbush, about the beloved figure in children’s literature.

PLEASE NOTE:

This tour of an historic townhouse includes stairs, but an  elevator is also available.
Masks are optional at TTN events – you are welcome to wear one during our tour.
Attendees can join fellow TTNers for (pay-your-own) lunch nearby after the tour.

Our Presenters:
Carolyn Waters, Director & Head Librarian, and additional Library staff.
