Religious Freedom in Early Philadelphia - Walking Tour
Tuesday, April 11, 2023
10 am – 12:30 pm
Commencing at 2nd & Walnut streets $30 TTN-members / $35 non-members
Join us for a fascinating 2 ½ hour walking tour in Old City, Philadelphia. The tour is led by a member of the Dialogue Institute (based at Temple University) which works with groups to create an atmosphere of trust as well as foster knowledge, mutual understanding, and informed dialogue across differences.
This tour will cover sites where religion was practiced and proclaimed in public spaces by a wide array of the city’s residents including enslaved and free people of African descent, white colonial elites, and itinerant preachers. Additionally, the tour will uncover the interfaith roots of some of Philadelphia’s most cherished institutions and explore the influence of William Penn’s religiously diverse colony on constitutional debates about religious freedom that continue to this day. The tour includes visits to several houses of worship and entrance inside two of them. Upon conclusion of the tour the group will enjoy lunch together at LaScala's Fire, 615 Chestnut Street (cost not included in the price of the event). Please email Fran Jonas (fjonas@comcast.net) to express your interest. As our programs are in high demand, it would be helpful if you cancelled as soon as you know you cannot attend. This will open a slot for another member. Please note that cancellations are accepted through 3/28/23 (no refunds will be made after that date). Members will be issued a credit applied to their TTN account and available for future use.
