About this event
Thursday, June 29, 2023, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Step Back in Time to 1830 on a private tour of the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden.
This 1799 carriage house, built on land owned by Abigail Adams family, is one of the oldest structures in Manhattan. It was converted in 1826 to one of 50 “day hotels” operating in and around New York City, and is currently the only historical site to focus on these unique places. In the 1820s and 30s, men and women would travel from crowded and polluted lower Manhattan up to "the country" of East 61st Street to spend the day enjoying fresh air, nature, and leisure-time activities: socializing, listening to music, reading, writing letters, games, dancing, carriage rides, and a hearty meal with the finest delicacies of the day.
Museum docents will take us back in time as we explore nine historical rooms. They will introduce fascinating and often little-known gems of New York City‘s 19th century history, from what people ate and wore, the music they listened to, their favorite pastimes, how they flirted, and what it all meant about how American society was changing. Look for the portrait of George Washington, still displayed in most public spaces at that time, and other intriguing historical details. We’ll also see the garden designed by landscape architect Alice Recknagel.
Optional dinner after the tour - Pay on your own
IMPORTANT NOTE: This 1799 two story building does not have an elevator. The tour includes 2nd floor rooms reached by a staircase. The museum entrance is 12 steps up from the sidewalk.
