About this event

How does a sculptor turn an initial idea into a finished work of marble? For Antonio Canova (1757–1822), the most famous artist of Europe’s revolutionary period, the answer was with clay. Working with his hands and small tools, Canova produced dazzling sketch models in clay, which helped him plan his designs for his large statues in marble. Imprinted with the fire of his imagination, these sketches reveal the artist’s extraordinary working process—a process that led to the creation of some of the most iconic works in the history of sculpture.

For Saturday, October 7th, we will visit the West Wing of the National Gallery of Art to observe the exhibit "Canova: Sketching in Clay." We will meet at noon at the Constitution Ave entrance between 4th and 7th St. Closest Metro stop is Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter on Green and Yellow Lines. After the exhibit we plan to have lunch at the Garden Cafe in the West building.

TTN Members who are not members of the Chapter or the SIG are welcome to sample up to three of this SIG's events. Members can also bring a non-member guest for a nominal fee.
