NYC – (P) Private Tour of M&S Schmalberg, NYC's Last Custom Fabric Flower Factory (July 23, 11AM)

Tuesday, July 23, 2024, 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM ET

Explore a unique family-owned business in Manhattan's Garment District that has been hand-making custom fabric flowers for designers and celebrities for over 100 years, and meet its fourth-generation owner.

When Morris and Sam Schmalberg started their artificial flower business in 1916, the NYC Garment District produced most of the women’s and children’s fashion apparel in the United States. In the 1940s there were dozens of “flower guys”. Today, M&S Schmalberg is the last of its kind in America and the rare domestic factory surviving in an “import world”. They manufacture specialty custom fabric flower products for couture fashion designers, milliners, and costume designers; but they will also sell ready-made and custom flowers to anyone who walks into their office/factory on West 36th Street.

During our private tour, led by factory owner Adam Brand, we will see every step of the vintage flower-making process, from fabric cutting and shaping using century-old metal molds and presses to the final hand assembly of the petals.

We will also view photos and samples of the custom products made for designers like Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren, and worn by A-list celebrities that you’ll recognize immediately.

After our tour everyone will receive a flower made at the factory to take home, and can purchase any items in stock at a discount.

Register soon – space is extremely limited.

PLEASE NOTE:

Attendees can join a (pay-your-own)  lunch nearby after our tour.

OUR GUIDE: Adam Brand began helping out at the family business when he was a child and joined full-time 13 years ago. He initially focused on marketing, social media and internet sales and then took over day to day management of the factory when his father retired. He is passionate about the firm’s unique role in New York City’s Garment District history and American fashion and design today.
