Our private guide and Asian food expert, David Dettmann, will introduce us to the highlights of Vietnamese cuisine at Nam Phuong Restaurant, followed by a tour through Hung Vuong Market, an adjacent Asian supermarket.

It is not uncommon for many of us to be overwhelmed when stepping in to an Asian market, as we encounter so many products we cannot identify.  David Dettman is coming to our rescue.  An Associate Director at UPenn's Center for East Asian Studies, Mr. Dettman has had a career-long, sidebar interest in food-focused pursuits.  He's given numerous lectures and tours of Philadelphia's Asian markets focusing on foods of China's borderlands, and is soon to publish a book on the history of food in Central Asia.  Don't miss his extensive website/blog:  asianmarketsphilly.com

At noon we'll gather at Nam Phuong Restaurant, for a lunch of memorable Vietnamese cuisine, carefully chosen and ordered for us by Mr. Dettman.  The dishes will be a surprise, but we'll be sure to have plenty of choices to suit everyone's palate.  While we are eating, David will provide commentary on the  selections, giving us insights into the various ingredients we will encounter at the market.

Following lunch, we'll break up in to smaller groups to visit the Hung Vuong Supermarket next door, with continued commentary by our expert guide.
