DC (P) - "Folger Shakespeare Library" DC Museum Arts (Noon ET) October 5

This is our October event.
Museum Arts will, sadly, not be meeting in September.

We will be visiting the newly renovated Folger Shakespeare Library that reopened its doors in June after a four-year project that expanded the space by 12,000 square feet. Visitors can view 82 copies of Shakespeare’s First Folio, the largest collection in the world. These rare editions are surrounded by artifacts from Shakespeare’s life and influence, such as a schoolbook used by Henry VIII. A replica of the printing press similar to the one that printed the First Folios is also on display.

The library is more than an homage to Shakespeare. An exhibit called “Imprints in Time”, on display until January, includes a first-edition copy of Frederick Douglass’s “Narrative” from 1845, a galley proof of “The Lord of the Rings” with author J.R.R. Tolkien’s handwritten corrections and an advance press copy of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

We will meet at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. We have a timed entry pass for noon.  After a self-guided tour, we will eat in the library’s new restaurant, the Quill and Crumb, which features soups, salads, and sandwiches.

Event Host: Barbara Ruben.   Repeat attendees will be invited to host a future event.

Event Contact: Gretchen Schieber, SIGs@DC-ttnwomen.org

Getting There:

Metro Orange, Blue, and Silver Lines (4 blocks): Take Metro’s Orange, Blue, or Silver Line to the Capitol South stop. Exit the Metro and walk up the hill on First Street SE, crossing C Street, SE and Independence Avenue. Take a right on East Capitol Street and walk two blocks. The Folger is on the right, and the entrance to the theater is at the southwest corner of East Capitol Street and 3rd Street.

Metro Red Line (8 blocks): Take Metro’s Red Line to the Union Station stop. From Union Station, walk south on First Street NE, toward the US Capitol for about five blocks. Turn left on East Capitol Street. Walk two blocks on East Capitol Street and then cross to the opposite sidewalk. The entrance to the theater is at the southwest corner of East Capitol Street and 3rd Street.

Folger recommends Metro, but notes there may be street parking: The parking meters closest to the Folger have a 2-hour limit and are enforced until 10 pm Monday through Saturday. Limited unmetered street parking is available on residential streets near the Folger. Please read the parking signs carefully if parking in an unmetered area. Allow ample time to find a parking space.
