Why Not Prosper (WNP) has been collecting items for distribution to incarcerated women on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving for several years. This activity allows WNP staff and volunteers to introduce their program and service offerings to currently incarcerated women as something to look forward to immediately upon their release.
These "Love Bags" contain stationery (notebooks, pencils, pre-stamped envelopes) and personal care items (bras, underwear, toiletries, and sanitary products). For the women in prison, receiving a "Love Bag" is more that just getting essential items. It symbolizes care, compassion and a connection to the outside world. These small tokens can help them feel remembered and valued during a time when they may feel isolated and forgotten.
And delivering these stuffed Love Bags" during the Thanksgiving holiday adds a profound layer of significance to the gesture. The bags serve as a tangible expression of the spirit of Thanksgiving, giving thanks and giving back.
The time has come to start filling up those bags! The Philadelphia Chapter Advocates for Equity has organized a collection drive and we hope you'll be inspired to help.
How to contribute: Starting now through November 16, you can purchase items from an Amazon Gift Registry (similar to a wedding registry). Your purchases will be sent directly to Why Not Prosper's headquarters in Germantown for assembly and delivery.
Simply follow these steps:
- Go to the Amazon gift registry: Amazon Registry Link
- You will see 26 separate items. There are multiple listings for bras, underwear and sanitary items in different sizes. Just pick from the available items and add to your cart.
- If you have an Amazon account, you will need to select the address to deliver the items to. Select "Reverend Michelle Simmons" as the shipping address. It should be the default, but double check. If you don't have an Amazon account, the items will automatically ship to the correct address.
Additional Volunteer Opportunities:
Details about volunteering to assemble the "Love Bags" and/or serve a Thanksgiving meal at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center will be shared in early October. We will need 25 volunteers for this activity.
