About 30% of breast cancer patients experience a relapse, meaning the cancer can return. Breast cancer cells, called seed cells, can sometimes move from the original breast tumor to other areas of the body.  They travel through your bloodstream and can spend some time lying dormant (sleeping) in places like the bone marrow. These resting cells, called dormant disseminated tumor cells (DTCs), may never resurface again, or your immune system may fight them off.  They may also reactivate causing a recurrence and spread as metastatic breast cancer.  Currently, there are no approved therapies specifically for breast cancer survivors with detectable minimal residual disease (MRD).

Dr. Angela DeMichele and her team at the University of Pennsylvania are working to change the typical approach of just "watchful waiting" after treatment.  Their research aims to prevent these dormant cells from wakng up and causing a relapse.  Current trials by UPenn’s 2-PREVENT Translational Center of Excellence are looking at if targeting DTCs in breast cancer survivors can reduce leftover cancer cells or prevent the cancer from returning.  One trial demonstrated that it's possible to find and treat these dormant cells, showing promise for preventing relapse.  During the program, we will also discuss whether participating in these clinical trials might be a meaningful option for us or for future generations, including our daughters. There will be time for Q&A at the end.

This Women’s Connection event is dedicated to the memory of Sue Axler, a beloved member of our organization and a passionate advocate for breast cancer research. Sue lived courageously with metastatic breast cancer for 17 years before passing away in 2017. Her work in the community and dedication to advancing research inspired many, and she would have been deeply gratified to see the progress we are making toward the goal of curing breast cancer.
