We will take a 90 minute tour of the Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue before heading off to lunch at the Mt. Airy Inn. Only 10 people can be on this tour – 5 in each of two golf carts. So, register early. We will schedule another tour if there’s enough interest.
Gentle Giants is a nonprofit that has saved over 1500 horses from slaughter, abuse, or neglect since 2005 by finding permanent, loving homes for some or offering sanctuary on its 300 acre+ facility for those less likely to be adopted. They house 150 horses at a time and save over 300 horses each year.
Directions: You must use GPS to get to Gentle Giants, since there is no sign on the road leading to it. The rescue is behind the Whispering Pines development, so don't be surprised if you think you are in the wrong place! Follow the shared driveway back until it forks, and stay straight/bear a slight right and continue down the hill and then back up. Parking is at the top of the hill beside the large white barn with red trim.
Shoes: Please arrive no more than 15 minutes early and wear sturdy closed toe shoes. They will not conduct a tour with people wearing sandals, flip flops, crocs, or such. Since we will be outside most of the time, please also dress for the weather.
Treats: You may bring bagged horse treats, apples or carrots, but please do not feed any horses without a staff member present, as some of the horses are on very strict diets.
Donations and Merchandise: Gentle Giants, depends on donations to fund their work. Please consider making a donation! You can also look at merchandise for sale on their website and if you want to buy anything, email Adria at tours@gentlegiants.org. She will have it ready for you at the tour.
Lunch: After the tour we will go to lunch at the Mt. Airy Inn, 1401 South Main Street, Mount Airy, MD 21771. You can check out the menu at www.mountairyinn.com.
Fees: The fees are nonrefundable and will be used to support Gentle Giants Horse Rescue.
