About this event
Fire is a fact of nature and the Santa Fe area is overdue for a major blaze. In the event of a conflagration, there will not be enough water, nor enough fire department personnel nor equipment to save every home. But there are steps you can take to increase the chances that your dwelling will nevertheless survive. In this brief presentation, Gary Kowalski, a former Hondo Fire & Rescue volunteer will help you understand wildfire behavior and employ that understanding to protect yourselves and your property from a big burn. Bring your questions and concerns! For peace of mind, be prepared.
Open to spouses and non-members. $10
Bring a friend!
Gary Kowalski is the author of Old Men and Fire: Parables from a Volunteer Firehouse, an account of his learning curve from retired pastor to Class I Certified Firefighter and Emergency Medical Responder during his seven years with the Santa Fe County Fire Department. As a lieutenant in the Hondo District of SFCFD he specialized in helping homeowners conduct hazard assessments and do risk reduction, sharing tips and tricks to create more "fire wise" living spaces. A graduate of Harvard College and the Santa Fe County Regional Fire Academy, he lives in the urban-wildland interface in the foothills above Santa Fe.
