Art Appreciation

General Information

The purpose of this group is to connect women who enjoy viewing, discussing, and learning about art. Each month we explore one aspect of art: an element of art, a particular art medium, an art movement, a specific artist, or an exhibit. Our focus is on increasing our knowledge of art.

If you are interested in participating or want to be on our contact list, 1) add yourself to the contact group or 2) Contact Patty Petersen using the Member Directory. If not a member, please contact us.

Event Information

Wednesday, September 11, 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Babs Plunkett has arranged for a docent to give us a one-hour private tour of the exhibits, Women in Soviet Art and Peasant Women of the Russian North at The Russian Museum of Art. If anyone has an accessibility issue, please let Patty Petersen know. You can find her in the member directory. The museum is located on the corner of Diamond Lake Road and 35W in south Minneapolis. Admission is $12 for those 65+ and $14 for other adults.

Wednesday, October 9, 1:00-2:45 p.m.

JeNell has arranged a visit to painter Patricia Canney’s studio in the California Building in Northeast Minneapolis. Patricia says, “I am intrigued by dresses, garments, shoes, objects of life as well as the spaces they inhabit. As a child, I played dress-up…with a trunk of old clothes, needle, thread, fabric and sewing machine or with paper and patterns, colors and scissors. It’s what I do still. It’s what I love…figurative without the figure.”

We can park in the lot (or on the streets) of The Mojo Coffee Gallery at 2205 California St., which is attached to The California Building. We will meet in the lot before being escorted through the coffee shop to her upstairs studio.

November 13?

Your input needed!

Wednesday, December 11, 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Dawn will give a presentation on Outsider art, which is defined as art that has a naive quality, often produced by people who have not trained as artists or worked within the conventional structures of art production. It is sometimes called Folk Art. This will be a presentation on Zoom.

The Art Appreciation Group is expanding; we’re open to all the arts - theater, dance, etc. If you know of an event that you’d like to share, please send the information to Patty.

You can find Patty Petersen's email in the Member Directory.
