Message from Phyllis Bookspan, Co-Chair, TTN Philadelphia Giving Circle:

Not all who donate to our Giving Circle have the time or inclination to volunteer for the Grants Committee.  Because the work the Grants Committee does is essential to our GC mission, I am using this month’s letter to give everyone an inside look at the process.

On Monday March 25th I, along with 25 other women, participated in the Giving Circle annual Grants Committee meeting for a review and first-round vote on the grant applications.  This year we received 29 grant applications. After an initial review, 13 applications were excluded because they did not meet our base requirements.  An application might be rejected if the applicant is a for-profit entity, if the applicant has a religious focus, or simply because the organization mission did not align with this year’s focus on Improving Early Literacy.

In early March, sixteen (16) applications advanced to the Grants Committee and were assigned to sub-groups for reading, review and recommendations.   At the March 25 meeting, a team leader for each review sub-group presented on the strengths and weaknesses of the application they reviewed. The full Grants Committee engaged in question and discussion of each of the sixteen (16) applications.  At the end of almost 4 hours of presentation and discussion, we voted.

My goodness, at a time when in our larger world, partisan divides in government cause gridlock, incivility runs rampant, and so many systems around us appear non-functional and crumbling, how refreshing and impressive it is to get things done, to get GOOD things done!   Our GC grants meeting struck me as democracy in action.   We didn’t all agree on the merits of each application, but we approached the task with courtesy, grace, preparation and intelligence.  Through participatory discussion and guided by the oversight and attentive coordination of Carol Williams, our Grants Committee Chair, we voted to advance twelve (12) grant applicants for site visits.

At our next meeting on May 1, the site teams will report back, and a second vote will be taken to choose our finalists. The group of finalists will be presented to you --all our voting donors. You will have time to review the finalists, and I hope everyone will share their voice and vote at the finalist selection meeting, which is May16, starting at 4 p.m. via Zoom.

Brava to Carol Williams, also to Patricia Renfro and Marcia Garell – who assisted Carol on the Grants Committee, and to everyone who contributed and worked so hard as readers and reviewers.  Our participants enable our process.

I can’t say enough how proud I am to work with such amazing women.

On an additional note, please scroll down to read the summary below of the Donor Appreciation Event we held on March 21st.  Sixty-eight (68) women enjoyed delicious refreshments, shared conversations with GC friends, heard presentations from ASAP (After School Activities Partnership) and YASP (Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project) and learned about some volunteer opportunities and found out about the recent SUPER impressive grant to 12Plus. Thanks to Susan Bleiberg and Karen Melikian, our dedicated and talented Events Committee, for running the Donor Appreciation event, and to our presenters for sharing their time and information.

TTN Philadelphia Giving Circle

Donor Appreciation Event

March 21, 2024

INSPIRED – that is the word we heard all afternoon from attendees at our TTN Philadelphia Giving Circle Donor Appreciation Event! The event was held on March 21st at the Friend’s Center on Cherry Street. The purpose? To send a huge “thank you” to our donors whose continued generosity makes the grants we award each year to deserving nonprofits in Philadelphia possible. About sixty donors mixed and mingled over snacks before we heard from all four of our 2023 award grantees.

Co-chairs Kriste Lindenmeyer welcomed everyone and Phyllis Bookspan introduced our grantee speakers. First up were Sara Morningstar and Tori Bakey-Urban from ASAP (After School Activities Partnerships). They told us about how they live their mission, which is to give children in underserved communities a safe place to go after school where they can engage in fun and challenging activities that help them thrive both inside and outside of school. They touch over 5,000 children a year (ages K-12), and yet they would like to do more. If anyone wishes to be a debate judge or a chess coach, they would love to hear from you. No formal debate or chess experience required, they will get you up-to-speed.

Next Felix Rosado and David Harrington spoke from YASP (Youth Art Self-empowerment Project). One of the programs they spoke about was the Healing Futures program, which brings juveniles who have harmed someone and, identified for diversion, to participate in a restorative justice program, together with those who were harmed. They work together to help all parties heal and move forward. Their work, which is focused on youth 12 to 18 years of age, has kept many of our youth out of jail and on a path to being productive members of our community.

Then, all four 2023 grantee nonprofits were brought forward for a panel Q&A. Jim Hardy, Kensington Soccer, provided a quick update on their programs and invited us all to attend their periodic Family Days at which books are handed out and activities are provided for the kids. And, finally, Raymond John, 12Plus, thanked our Giving Circle not only for our financial support, but also the ongoing volunteer guidance of several of our members. He also announced that 12Plus was just awarded a million-dollar transformative gift from MacKenzie Scott for the work they do in our public schools. Congratulations to 12Plus! We look forward to the transformative impact they will have with these added resources.

Kudos to all our grantees of 2023! They are all inspirational in so many ways. All who attended were moved by their stories, humbled by their work and pleased that we – as a Giving Circle – were able to contribute in some small way to their success and growth. A special “thank you” to Susan Bleiberg and Karen Melikian who organized this wonderful event and to everyone who participated.

And to our Donors . . . THANK YOU for your donations over the years and please continue to give generously. It is through your donations that we can continue to make substantial grants that benefit women and children in Philadelphia. You will find a donation button below. Only through the power of collective giving – and you – can we continue to make a difference in our community.

*** REGISTRATION OPENS . . . APRIL 15 ***

Why is May 16th the biggest night of the year?

Thursday, May 16th, is the Giving Circle’s Annual Voting Meeting. It’s the culmination of months and months of work, not only by our Grants Committee members, but also by the applicants themselves. Over the last few months, the applicants have worked tirelessly to educate us about their organizations by completing our application, answering our questions and hosting us at site visits.

On May 16, we will hear from each of the selected semi-finalists and vote to select the final three to receive one of our grants. It is the night when all of our work comes down to choosing, from the many worthy applicants, those that we will financially support and partner with for the next 12 months. Think of it as our night at the Oscars without the outfits or the red carpet.

Who can attend?

If you contributed $200 or more in 2023, you are a “voting” donor and we encourage you to attend as well as vote. And, if you have never attended a voting session before, it is quite exciting.

What you will learn?

You will hear from five worthy nonprofits that have been selected by the Grants Committee to be our semi-finalists. You will meet them on Zoom and they will tell you about their work and the children whose lives they touch. These presentations always make for a moving and inspirational evening.

So, what are we asking?

We are asking that you mark your calendars with the date and – when registration opens - to register so that you will receive the Zoom invitation as the event draws near. We need all of you to be there to make it the biggest and best night of the year!

Grants Committee Update

As Phyllis mentioned above, the Grants Committee met on March 25 and voted to approve 12 applicants to move forward to the site visit stage. These visits, where committee members get to meet the applicants in person and often observe programming in action, are the highlight of service on the Grants Committee. The committee will meet again on May 1 to select the finalists in advance of the Giving Circle's May 16 Donor Voting Meeting.
