Attention all . . . Women's Connection members and Giving Circle donors

In August we don't send out a full newsletter because its summer, but we do have an important volunteer opportunity we want to share. Achieve Now - one of our 2024 grant recipients - is seeking reading coach volunteers for the 2024-2025 school year.

If you haven't volunteered before, it is quite a rewarding experience. Scroll down and hear directly from Shawn Kairschner, executive director of Achieve Now and read three testimonials from our own members.

And, if interested or - would just like more information - please contact Sandi Slap at sslap@comcast.net.

Do you have an hour a week to help a child improve their reading skills?

Achieve Now, a Philadelphia-based literacy non-profit, is one of WoCom’s partner organizations. As the 2024-25 school year approaches, they are recruiting volunteer coaches for their remote, one-to-one tutoring program that provides reading support for students in first and second grade. You will be paired with a student, and the two of you will meet for one hour per week at the same day and time. You can choose the day and time that best fits your schedule.

No experience is required! Achieve Now’s research-based curriculum is scripted, and each session is supported by an Achieve Now literacy instructor. This year’s one-to-one model is 100% virtual, so you can provide a child with meaningful mentorship and impactful instruction from the comfort of your office or home! The program runs from mid-October to late May. And click here --> for the 2024-2025 Achieve Now Coach Brochure.

Again, our contact with Achieve Now is Sandi Slap at sslap@comcast.net. Please consider being a volunteer.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they have the heart.” – Elizabeth Andrew.

“I have tutored an Achieve Now student for an hour each week for the past six years. How to describe my Tuesday morning sessions with a second-grader (who was usually sleepy, sometimes fearful of making mistakes, frequently eager to read stories but, on most days, happier to play Simon-Says)? Upon reflection, my tutoring sessions were challenging, usually heart-warming, and almost always tremendously rewarding. Achieve Now has added a lot to my life!

Spending an hour a week with 8 year old girls in second grade for the last several years has been an interesting experience. Despite struggles at times, these students have always tried their best to learn new strategies to increase their reading ability. The pride they felt when they were able to master a new concept always made me smile and gave me a tremendous sense of satisfaction. Achieve Now’s program is so important for students in Philadelphia’s public schools and I am very proud to be a coach. I look forward to the upcoming school year!

Being a coach with Achieve Now gives me the opportunity to help a child learn to read! You can have a huge impact on their life in this way. I get so much joy from getting to know each child, being a positive presence, and helping them grow and develop. Also, the Achieve Now reading specialists are very supportive and I’ve learned a lot from them.
