PHL (V) - The 1619 Project Discussion Program - 3 Sessions (4pm ET May 10)

The 1619 Project
A 3-part Discussion Program
Sponsored by PHL Advocates for Equity Committee

Wednesdays, May 10, June 14, July 12
4pm - 5:30pm Eastern Time
Members:  $15       Non-Members $25

The 1619 Project has garnered a tremendous amount of publicity and earned a Pulitzer Prize for its creator, Nikole Hannah-Jones. It is described as offering a “profoundly revealing vision of the American past and present.” Many of us have wanted to delve into it but haven’t yet. Others have read it and want to have a thoughtful discussion.

Please join us for a three-session discussion group on Zoom. The group will meet once a month to delve into a chapter from The 1619 Project book and corresponding episode from the HULU documentary series.**  Designated facilitators utilizing published discussion guides will guide this discussion group. The sessions will be organized in groups of 7 to 10 individuals so that everyone gets a chance to contribute. Please note that individuals will be randomly assigned to a group at the start of each monthly session so you may not be with the same individuals throughout the three discussion group meetings.

The discussion group will meet once per month for 1 ½ hours. The dates, times and program topics are below:
May 10, 4-5:30 pm ET - Democracy
June 14, 4-5:30 pm ET - Race
July 12, 4-5:30 pm ET - Music

Please make every attempt to commit to all three sessions. You will receive a reminder email notifying you about what to read and watch prior to each session.

** If you don’t have access to HULU, please still consider signing up for this virtual program as we will be discussing the 1619 Project book extensively. However, here is a link to Hulu to find out about access to the documentary series. Perhaps you can watch with a friend or family member!

Nikole Hannah Jones
Nikole Hannah-Jones
Nikole Hannah-Jones is an award-winning investigative reporter who covers civil rights and racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine and the Knight Chair in Race and Journalism at Howard University where she is the founding director of the Center for Journalism & Democracy.  Her reporting has earned her the Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur “Genius” Grant, the Knight Award for Public Service, the Peabody Award, two George Polk awards and the National Magazine Award three times. She is a Society of American Historians Fellow and a member of the Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Nikole got her first letter to the editor published at just 11 years old and she became hooked on journalism when she joined her high school newspaper and began writing about students like her, who were bused across town as part of a voluntary school desegregation program, winning her very first journalism award from the Iowa High School Press Association.  Her heroes are the race beat reporters, such as Ida B. Wells, Ethel Payne, Simeon Booker and Claude Sitton, whose fearless coverage helped move this nation closer to its promise.

Prior to joining The New York Times, Nikole worked as an investigative reporter at ProPublica in New York City, where she spent three years chronicling the way official policy created and maintains segregation in housing and schools. Before that, she reported for the largest daily newspaper in the Pacific Northwest, The Oregonian in Portland, Ore., where she covered numerous beats, including demographics, the census and county government.
