NYC (P) Roosevelt Island Private Walking/Riding Tour (11am)

Take the Roosevelt Island tram with TTNers to learn about the fascinating past and recent innovative development of the island community just a short, scenic ride from Manhattan.

Judith Berdy, long-time President of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society and the island’s “unofficial mayor” will be our guide. She will introduce us to the island and its history.

We will then board a southbound Red Bus to the entrance to Southpoint Park to learn the history of the City Hospitals and Smallpox Hospital, view the FDR Hope Memorial, and have about 20 minutes to tour the park.

Next, we’ll take a northbound Red Bus to the Cornell Tech campus. We will have (pay your own) light refreshments there, on the terrace or indoors, then walk around the campus and learn about the site's history.

Then we will take a Red Bus northbound to the Octagon and learn the island’s development history en-route.

At the Octagon we will hear about the unique building’s history and then proceed to Lighthouse Park and the Girl Puzzle sculpture.

After Northpoint park we will return via bus to the Tram terminal. The tour will last approximately three hours.

NOTE: Walking Tours are rain or shine, and will not be re-scheduled unless a National Weather Service Emergency is issued.

Please wear comfortable shoes, bring water and an umbrella, if there is a chance of rain

OUR PRESENTER: Judith Berdy, writer, researcher, and lecturer, has been a resident of Roosevelt Island for thirty-five years and the president of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society since 1999. She wrote the first illustrated guide to the Island’s past, published in 2003, edits the Historical Society’s quarterly Blackwell’s Journal, and gives historical tours and lectures for the society. She serves on the boards of several Roosevelt Island health and social service agencies and is considered the Island’s unofficial “Mayor”.
