NYC (V) - A Civil Rights Tour of the Upper West Side (6 PM ET)
Thursday, February 1, 2024, 6:00 PM (EST)
The Upper West Side of Manhattan is home to 20 sites connected with important people and moments in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. Join us for a virtual walking tour of these historic locations.
Leigh Hallingby, TTN’s frequent walking tour guide tour guide, will begin our virtual exploration with an examination of New York City’s most prominent memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will decode this most unusual and complicated sculpture, which most people walk past without stopping to appreciate.
Further stops will relate to Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Belafonte, and Ellie Wiesel, among others.
An Upper West Sider whom many people are surprised to learn was a civil rights activist was the writer and humorist Dorothy Parker.
There will be plenty of time afterwards for comments and questions.
