Enjoy a visit to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with a tour of the African American John Rhoden sculpture exhibit followed by a magical performance of the Philadelphia Chinese Opera.
This is the final day of the first comprehensive retrospective of 20th century African American sculptor, John Rhoden (1916-2001) exhibit. With a sculptural sensibility defined by his extensive world travels, sensualism, and a breadth of visual influences, Rhoden worked in a style that was ahead of his time. Through approximately 70 sculptures in bronze, wood, and stone, and archival materials, this exhibition will illustrate the visual and technical mastery of this award-winning artist.
After touring the Rhoden sculptures, we'll enjoy a 2 pm performance of the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society. Presenting traditional Chinese opera, the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society will transport us to ancient China with their elaborate storytelling, brilliant costumes, beautiful arias, and mesmerizing dances which include the Sword Dance, Ribbon Dance, Water Sleeve, and Fan Dance. Dating back to the late 18th century, this highly developed and stylized art form is a synthesis of many Chinese cultural elements: song, music, dance, dramatization, martial arts, acrobatics, costume, face painting, folk art, and traditional narratives.
The registration fee includes admission to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Rhoden sculpture tour, and the Chinese Opera performance.
