Join us for a private tour of Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962 at NYU’s new Grey Art Museum in NoHo - the first major exhibition to examine the historical impact of the expatriate art scene in Paris after World War II.
This exhibit reappraises the legacy of American artists in postwar Paris. It features early work by over 70 Americans who relocated to France hoping to escape racism, sexism, and homophobia at art institutions in the US.
The expatriates included household names like Sam Francis, Ellsworth Kelly, William Klein, and Peter Saul as well as underappreciated African American veterans - men who all studied in Paris under the GI bill. The Parisian artists community also had women seeking artistic freedom, like future icons Joan Mitchell and Nancy Spero.

The exhibition also includes works by French artists such as Jean Dubuffet that were on display in the galleries and salons of postwar Paris, and clearly had an influence on the Americans’ artistic development.
After our tour you can stay for (pay-your-own) lunch with fellow TTNers at Phebe’s, at Bowery & East 4th Street.
