NYC (P) Private Walking Tour - Experience Harlem with a Jazz Age/Billie Holliday Focus (11AM ET)
About this event
Saturday, April 13, 2024, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Take a walk through Central Harlem to see spots where the jazz age thrived starting in the "roaring 20s" with a focus on Billie Holiday’s life in the area - guided by Mark Satloff, a current Harlem resident.
TTN members will get rare insight into the locale of one of the most creative periods ever in the arts — the Jazz Age in Central Harlem, which took place alongside the flowering of musical innovation, visual arts, poetry and prose known as the Harlem Renaissance.
- Follow in Billie Holiday’s footsteps, from her first residence in New York City to the site of her first performances just seven blocks away.
- Dip into the famous Strivers Row, and see buildings where jazz musicians lived and gathered in the 1920s and beyond.
- Visit 133rd Street — the original “Swing Street ” and see locations of the colorfully-named clubs that made it the top jazz destination in the city during prohibition, including the Tillie’s, Pod & Jerry’s, the nearby Hot-Cha and Uptown Clubs and more.
We will walk about 18 blocks between 133rd and 140th Streets on the tour.
The NYPL Schomburg Library on Lenox and 135th has public restrooms you can use before or after our walk.
After the tour you can join fellow TTNers for (pay your own) brunch at Ponty Bistro.
Our Guide: Mark Satlof is a fourth generation New Yorker, a current resident of Strivers Row in Harlem, and a jazz afficionado. He is a licensed New York City Sightseeing Guide and a regular guide for Untapped New York. He received a BA in History from Columbia University.
In addition to sharing his knowledge of NYC as a tour guide, Mark is Senior Vice President of Shore Fire Media.
